The term "atheist" is debated and deflected all over the place these days. Some people who I would label as atheists prefer to go by the less offensive term "agnostic." Many people like to assure the world that they aren't atheists - heaven forbid! - but they just don't believe in god.
When I say that I am an atheist, I mean these things: I do not believe in a personal god, which covers pretty much any religion you can come up with. Furthermore, I do not think that there is evidence for any kind of deity at all, but I do not put myself in the position of saying anything definite. That is, I do not say that there is no god.
But my first point covers it all. No personal god exists. No deity cares for our wellbeing, observes our actions or expects anything at all from us.
I do not believe in a god, but I do not explicitly deny the possibility of the existence of any god. Am I an atheist? Yes. Does this make me "as bad as a fundamentalist Christian or Muslim"? Absolutely not!
