Spain has drafted a surprising new law: apes have rights to life and freedom. It may well be true that this will lead to silliness and hypocrisy (why not extend this right to pigs and cattle?), but it is a fantastic and fascinating step.
This may be a landmark event, something that children will study 100 years from now in their history textbooks: the first ever legislation granting rights to animals other than humans.
